picot peds, bento bag, & watercolors

on the needles . . . i casted on the first of the purl bee’s pompom peds in dove grey. in lieu of pom poms, i’m going with a picot cast on. i’ve also been working on this 100% silk (in ballet pink !) in a new design . . i’ve found that i do best to have one project that i’m designing as well as one that i’m just following a pattern, beats any boredom !

i also sewed this bento project bag thanks to this tutorial. the original purpose of this kind of bag was for snacks & things but it is the perfect size to throw in a purse with a pair of socks on the needles !

’tis the season! i used micron pens & watercolors to paint these two cards. one for mothers day (me & my two sisters in her arms !) & one for my favorite college graduate who loves hockey.

& a couple painting-of-the-week updates ! above is “trail”

& “intertwined” (this gold is unbelievable in real life !)

fawns, flowers, bicycles, gold !

i’ve been keeping up with my painting a week challenge, above is “spring”

& “lock”
i used micron pens & watercolors for these !

& an ultra-simple project — my mom sent me this phone case that she thought i would like & i decided to make it myself since it seemed so simple! this martha stewart gold paint is really pigmented & not too expensive

i’ve also sped through my cancun lacy top! one of the pieces is blocking & one is just at the cast off edge. i’m totally in love with the yarn i’m using: blue heron rayon metallic. i bought it at vogue knitting live a few years ago, the little specks of gold are perfect !

painting a week

a friend & i started a “painting a week” challenge — we pick a word each week & use whatever medium we like to portray it & post the result on sundays !
if you’re following my instagram, this will be old news but here are the past few weeks work:

“citrus” — grapefruit in ink & watercolors

“flight” — gold tipped wings in pen

“wave” in watercolors

“break” — daybreak in oils on canvas

“starlight” — snowy mountains in watercolors

“sleep” — coffee & reading in bed

if you’re interested in the other half of the challenge, check out claireisaherman on instagram !

lace overlay hat & freelancing

i’m starting a new design . . . a lace overlay hat. i’m really excited about how its turning out so far. i used really soft chunky wool for the base of the hat & the lace is a super-fine (& also soft) alpaca.

i’ve also polished up my blog design! i made this new header & this wip video. i started with a bunch of watercolor circles & then added the text & knit stitch border in illustrator. adding in these social media buttons that i made from gold foil photos really seemed to tie it together

along the same lines, i did some exciting work freelancing recently. i created this logo for She Enlightened, a new feminist-spiritual site with meditations, affirmations, and a mission of gender equality. we worked together to create this logo, a combination of a lotus flower (a classic feminine symbol) with the “aries” symbol (often connected with the womb & feminism). i’m really proud of how it came out, especially when i see these sketches from where we started out !

(if you’re interested in hearing more about she enlightened you can check out their twitter as well !)

champagne & summertime knitting

I recently finished (sort of – I’m still considering backgrounds & frames) this watercolor of a champagne bottle. The foil bits are real (!) gold leaf! It doesn’t show up well on camera but in real life it shines.

& on the needles I have this super-lightweight top-down sweater. It’s slow going in the summer weather, though.

p.s. I’m currently interning at an amazing organization : Women4Women Knitting4Peace ! I’m teaching knitting lessons and attending knitting groups, trouble shooting patterns, & a ton more.
